Logitech remotes use software to control your devices and add activity settings to the controls. This is very different from programming a universal remote by pointing it at a device and entering a code. Using a Logitech Harmony 550 remote as an example in this article, it’s easy to program a universal remote, even though there are different ways to do it.
Start your computer and go to Logitech.com to get the software for your Harmony remote on your computer. Click on the “Products” link at the top of the Logitech Home page. From the drop-down menu, choose “Remotes,” then “Harmony Remotes,” and then click on the model of your remote. Click “Support” and then “Downloads.” Choose the operating system of your computer from the drop-down menu, then download and install the Harmony software on your PC.
Open your new Harmony software and make a new account. To set up your Harmony account, you will need to choose a user name and password and enter all of the information asked for. All of your settings are saved in an online account.
Once you’re done setting up your account, go to the “Devices” tab. Click the button that says “Add Device.” Use the drop-down menu to choose your first device. It will then put a list of vendors in the section for manufacturers. Choose the company that made your device and type in the model number.
Click “Add Another Device” and repeat the steps to add all of the devices in your home entertainment system that you want to be controlled by your Harmony universal remote.
Once you’ve added the last device, click the “Next” button. Verify your model numbers. Click through the screen for each device’s input settings and make sure they are correct. Click “Next” to go to the page with the review. Check all the information to make sure it’s correct.
Set up the things you want to do. Click on the “Activity” tab and then on “Add Activity.” If you want to run the activity wizard, choose “Yes.” Answer the basic questions asked by the wizard and let the software set up the activity for you. Click “Done.”
If you want to change the way your remote buttons work, click “Customize Buttons” in the Activity panel. Look at the list of buttons and choose a device-specific command for each one. Click “Done” when you’re done.
Use a USB cable to link your new Harmony remote to your PC. Click “Update Remote” and then “Next” to move on. The remote is ready when the progress bar is full. Test it out. If something isn’t working right, reconnect it to your PC, change some settings, and click “Update Remote” again.
