Cable modems are a great way for your home or business to get fast Internet. If you have two different modems, you can combine them in different ways to get different results, such as better bandwidth management, faster speeds, or access for more than one device. You can connect all of these devices to a single Internet account, or you can give each one its own Internet account from your Internet service provider. This will double your bandwidth.

Bridging

If you only have one Internet connection but two modems, you can connect them by putting one modem into bridge mode and physically connecting them with an Ethernet cable. This lets the modem act as a router and share your Internet connection. This is useful if you want to have two separate network groups in your home or office. But many routers offer the same set of bridge features for less money, and they often use and speed up bandwidth better.

IP Settings

To connect your modems, you have to change how they are set up. Join your main modem to the Internet and your computer. Find the modem’s IP address and subnet mask and write them down. Connect your PC to the other modem and turn off its “DHCP Server” settings, which are sometimes called “enabling Bridge mode.” Choose the “static IP” option and type in an IP address that is the same as your main router’s IP address, except for the last number. Enter the same number as your primary router in the subnet mask boxes.

Connections to the outside

Make sure your main modem is connected to the Internet and plug an Ethernet cable into one of its LAN ports. Connect the other end of this cable to the LAN port on your second modem if you want devices on each network to be able to talk to each other. If all you want to do is share your Internet connection and keep your networked devices separate, plug the other end of the cable into a WAN port on your secondary modem.

Load Balancing

When you have two Internet connections and two modems, load balancing is one of the more useful features. Using a dual WAN router, also called a load-balancing router, you can connect both cable modems to the router to split your Internet traffic evenly between the two Internet connections. This means that one device’s heavy Internet use won’t slow down the other devices, and even if one Internet connection goes down, the other devices will still be able to connect to the Internet.
