Many PDFs that are designed to be viewed on the web have a very low resolution, but if you want to print them, you’ll need a higher resolution. If you want to change the resolution of your PDF, you must first make changes to the program you used to make the PDF and then convert the file to PDF format again. To finish this task, you can use Adobe Acrobat, Photoshop, a program that works with Acrobat, or Adobe’s online “Create PDF” tool.
Go straight to the Acrobat toolbar if you’re using a PDF-compatible Microsoft Office program or another program like InDesign that works with PDFs. Choose “Preferences” and then “Advanced Settings” or something similar, depending on your version. Under “File Options,” you can change the size of the PDF you want to convert.
If you’d rather use Adobe Acrobat to do the conversion right away, go to “Edit > Preferences.” Then, choose “Convert to PDF” and find the program you want to use to turn the PDF into a different format (includes InDesign and other popular software options). Select “Edit Settings,” “Standard,” and “Edit” again under “Adobe PDF Settings” to bring up a screen where you can change the PDF resolution for files that are converted to PDF using the Acrobat program.
Once the new resolution settings are made, open the PDF file in the program you used to make it. Go ahead and change the resolution of your PDF file (select “Create PDF” in whichever Acrobat-integrated program you used in Steps 1 and 2).
If you want to change the resolution, you can open your PDF file in Adobe Photoshop instead of using a program that works with Acrobat. You’ll be asked right away to choose settings for the PDF, such as the resolution. Type in the resolution you want, and then go on to open the file. Save the PDF using the new size.
Sign up for an Adobe account and you can use the Create PDF tool instead of changing the resolution. Choose “Convert a File” and then choose the file you want to turn into a PDF. Under “Set Options,” choose “Preferences” on the left side of the screen. Change the optimization settings to “Print” under “Document Options” and then click “Edit Settings” to the right. Make sure “Print” (or another option that could work for your project) is still chosen, and then click “Edit.” Under “General Settings > File Options,” you can change the resolution to suit your needs.
